Forever 21 coming to Niagara Could a new mall make Niagara on the Lake a big time outlet shopping destination akin to Grove City, Pennsylvania? Lord Mayor David Eke thinks so.
Speaking at the kick off for The Outlet Collection at Niagara Tuesday, he said an outlet centre put Grove City on the map and it can do the same for Niagara. "One year from today when we're shopping here, the Outlets of Niagara will be the item that puts Niagara on the map," Eke told a crowd of dignitaries and Ivanhoe Cambridge employees gathered at the construction site. "We too will achieve a brand name." The large patch of land at Glendale Ave. and Taylor Rd. across from White Oaks will be home to 100 retail stores by this time next year, including massive outdoor retailer Bass Pro Shops and fashion giant Forever 21. Ivanhoe Cambridge plans to open the $200 million open air outlet centre on May 15, 2014. It will be made up of eight buildings in Phase 1, including a 77,000 square foot Bass Pro Shop and a food court burberry socks pavilion. The mall will also have an event area for a farmer's market and gathering place. Ivanhoe Cambridge owns and manages malls across Canada, including Vaughan Mills premier outlets. The Niagara centre will be the company's first open air outlet mall and will build on its Mills concept, said David Baffa, senior vice president, retail development for the central region. "The intention is to take this and roll this out across the country," burberry quilted jacket outlet sale he said of The Outlet Collection concept. He said Niagara on the Lake's climate, with little snow, is ideal for the open air concept. Coverings between buildings will be in place to keep shoppers burberry swim weather protected. The 520,000 square foot development is expected to generate 1,000 construction jobs while the malls' stores and food operations will create 1,500 full and part time jobs. Stores on board include Banana Republic, Bench Outlet, Brooks Brothers Outlet, Calvin Klein, Gap Outlet, Izod, Michael Kors Outlet, Naturalizer, Osh Kosh, Tommy Hilfiger and Van Heusen. Eke said he felt like he won the lottery when the company approached the town about building the centre. He said it will generate tax revenue and be a major tourist draw and gateway along the QEW. Walter Sendzik, CEO of the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce, said the sheer size and scope of the project and the types of retailers it's attracting will make it a destination for people outside Niagara. People will stay for four or five days and the new mall will become part of burberry clothing online the Niagara experience, he said. It may also help stop shoppers at the border. The chamber launched the campaign "1 Less Trip" at the Pen Centre last month to encourage local shoppers to make one less cross border shopping trip a year. The mall had to jump over a few hurdles since Regional council approved the project in June 2012. The Town of Lincoln, which had its own hopes for a retail development, and White Oaks resort, concerned about parking plans, appealed to the Ontario Municipal Board. Both reached settlements with the Ivanhoe Cambridge, clearing the way for the project in December.
